The very sad news today of the passing of musical legend Allen Toussaint – a fixture in the sound of New Orleans, a guiding light to so many musicians – an unmistakable and legendary talent. Allen Toussaint left too early – but then, in his case, leaving any time would be too early. Admired by countless colleagues, journalists, and members of the audience, the legacy of Allen Toussaint is vast and all-encompassing – we’re lucky, but that’s small consolation for a man whose vibrant presence and boundless energy graced the lives of so many around him. Now, we’re content to hear him preserved in his work.
As way of tribute, here is a concert from the first day of Jazz Fest, April 26, 2013 featuring a set by Allen Toussaint and Guitar Slim jr., a musician whose father worked closely with Allen Toussaint.
Further evidence the music and legacy of Allen Toussaint spreads over generations.
RIP: Allen Toussaint – a larger-than-life figure whose spirit will be around forever.
