Injecting something new and something calm for a Sunday – The Anne Wolf Quartet, recorded live at the Belgian Jazz Festival on April 4th of this year.

Anne Wolf is a name new to me, even though she’s been around and active since 2001 – okay, I came late to the party.

Jazz has come a long way since the days of 52nd Street and the explosion of small groups and Bop. Further evidence it isn’t going to sit in one place for very long before spreading out and occupying many different seats on this journey of discovery.

Anne Wolf is also one of a continuing wave of Women coming to Jazz and making statements and leaving impressions. All in all, we’re in healthy places.

A little about Anne Wolf (thanks to the Jazzathome Festival website);

She is a Belgian jazz pianist and keyboard player from Brussels.

Wolf studied classical piano and in the mid-eighties went to the Brussels Conservatory, where she studied music theory, music analysis and harmony and later jazz piano. She was taught by Charles Loos and Eric Legnini.

Even during her studies she was already active as a professional musician, not only in jazz, but also in pop music, for example.

After her studies she started a trio and in 2001 she released her first album. Besides her trio she also played in the groups of Pierre Van Dormael and Charles Loos. In 2002 she received a Django d’Or for young talent. In 2010 the second album of her trio was released, now with her husband, the Dutch double bass player Theo de Jong and the (also Dutch) percussionist Janco van der Kaaden.

Wolf has played on recordings of Sttellla and Cheiro de Choro, among others.

In October a new CD “Danse avec les Anges” will be released by Igloo with her group “ANNE WOLF QUATUOR”.

If you didn’t know already, dive in and tune out – it’s Sunday after all.
