Seeking to forge an inspired new partnership between the civil rights and labor movements, about 75,000 marchers converged Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial on the 30th anniversary of the march led by Martin Luther King Jr. The heat was sweltering and the crowd far thinner than the 200,000 ) plus who jammed the Washington Mall in •1963, but the message from dozens of prominent speakers was clear: Despite three decades of progress, far too little has changed for working poor people and minorities in this country. “Thirty years ago, we couldn’t check into a Hyatt or a Hilton hotel. Today we all have the right to check in but few of us have the means to check out,” said the Rev. Joseph S. Lowery, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, in the most rousing speech of the day-long rally for “Jobs, Justice and Peace.” Lowery, like several other speakers, noted with frank disappointment that President Clinton decided not to attend the event but remain on vacation in Martha’s .Vineyard. * , In a pointed effort to assuage march organizers, Clinton devoted his entire weekly radio address Saturday to commemorating King’s dream for “equality, brotherhood and the need to make real the promises of democracy. “We’ve come a long way,” Clinton said, “but clearly we’ve got a long way to go before realizing his dreams.’.
In other news. Tropical Storm Emily developed for the second time into a hurricane and was expected to grow stronger over the weekend, forecasters said. “It is now a hurricane once again,” Hugh Cobb, a meteorologist with the National Hurricane Center in suburban Coral Gables, said Friday evening. Emily’s winds likely will reach 100 mph and could get even stronger, Cobb said. At 11 p.m. EDT, Emily was centered at latitude 26.6 north and longitude 65.8 west, or about 400 miles south of Bermuda. The system had top sustained winds near 80 mph. Emily was heading west at 10 mph, a course and speed it was expected to hold through today. Thursday, the system surprised forecasters by exploding from its predawn status as a nameless tropical depression with top winds of 35 mph into Tropical Storm Emily, then Hurricane Emily – all in the space of a few hours. Emily weakened into a tropical storm late Thursday evening, then began to gain force.
And finally – From Singapore – Actress Elizabeth Taylor arrived in Singapore early Sunday to provide moral support for troubled pop star Michael Jackson on his birthday. Airport officials said Jackson’s handlers whisked her away from the terminal at which she arrived to another area to clear immigration formalities. Jackson arrived here Saturday on the second leg of his “Dangerous” world tour. He said nothing to reporters on arriving at Changi Airport from Thailand about the allegations being investigated by Los Angeles police that he had sexually abused a 13-year-old boy. Jackson is scheduled to perform on Sunday – his 35th birthday – and Monday evenings at the National Stadium.
Taylor and pop singer Janet Jackson were expected to provide encouragement after the allegations. Janet is Michael Jackson’s sister, and Taylor is a close friend.
