Sly & The Family Stone – live at Harlem Cultural Festival – June 29, 1969 –
Sly & The Family Stone were the staple in just about every diet of anyone who went to the Fillmore in San Francisco or the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles from 1967-1969. They were a powerhouse band and they were non-stop with Sly (Sylvester) Stewart at the helm, and they were one of the best soul-funk acts of the late 1960s. Put them on the same bill with Tower of Power and the house would explode.
This concert, from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival in New York, puts them just ahead of their legendary performance at Woodstock. They had a string of hits and were crossing over everywhere. Their massive appeal made them essential listening with top-40 as well as FM underground audiences.
And they sound as fresh today as they did in 1969. Some bands are timeless – Sly & The Family Stone were one of them.
