Heading into Retro territory this Saturday with a set by The Fuzillis, recorded in Madrid at RNE 3 on May 25th of this year.

Huge in Spain and most of Europe but not so much over here, The Fuzillis are a UK-based band totally embracing retro in the form of an homage to Surf/Rockabilly/Jump-blues and high-pressure 50s Rock n’ Roll. It almost seems an obligation that each decade has its very own musical deep-dive into genres from the past, The Fuzillis are ambassadors for a genre that was high on energy, danceable, capable of inspiring the social aspects of assimilating that genre into clothes and hairstyles. It harkens back to a much less complicated period of time – one that seems more nostalgic in its parody than evoking the actual era itself because 90% of the people engaging in the music and the era itself are most likely not from the era. But that’s not to say it’s a bad thing – The Fuzillis are here to offer some high-energy distraction that is overall positive and pretty harmless – and we are currently living in a time when positive and harmless are not in any plentiful supply.

A little back story on The Fuzillis as given on their Bandcamp page:

This non stop, rock’and’roll grind-a-go go machine was formed in London in late 2014 and today features the high energy rock and roll twang of guitar player Dani Martini; the sleazy, growly tenor sax-tones of Mr Spencer Evoy; the thunderous jungle rhythms of Toby “Two Beers” Ungless and the low down tones of the boss of the bass, Mr Frankie Fuzilli.

And some high-energy enthusiasm from the Spanish website Momenta Zos (Mutick) in May of this year:

This unstoppable grind-a-go go rock’n’roll machine was formed in London in the late 1970s.

2014. They are characterized by the great energy of the guitarist Mr. Dani Martini, by the growls of the

tenor sax, the thunderous jungle rhythms and the deep tones of Mr. Frankie’s bass

Fuzilli Sr.

They mix Link Wray and the craziest melodies of Las Vegas Grind into an atomic r’n’r cocktail.

with a shot of Grady Gaines of the Upsetters, they add a pinch of The Fabulous

Wailers and a slice of Nick Curran and all of it covered with the most danceable melodies,

wild and party-goers of Planet Earth.

They have played at countless festivals in Spain, including stellar performances at the

Funtastic Dracula Carnival, Surforama, Tobalina Valley Festival, The New Barcelona

Hayride or the Bule Bule Toga Fest, as well as in Europe in Hipsville, The Rockabilly Rave,

Rockfestivales and Roll Circus in Amsterdam (headlining its 10th anniversary),

What’s Cookin’ sold out a while ago. As did their debut LP, “Grind A GoGo Vol. 1,” which

has been out of print for several years. Both were released on FOLC Records. In 2023 they released a new

album accompanied by an EP. In June 2024, a new 7″ called “Pickle” was released

Swap”, which has a surprise included.

The Fuzillis… vintage, but not old-fashioned… retro and fresh… one word instr-o-mental grind-a-go go… some party monsters.

With THE FUZILLIS you’ll dance until your toes bleed.

An enthusiastic recommendation, to be sure. All that’s left for you is to press Play and get moving – it’s the weekend after all.
