A few notes from the legendary and inimitable Thelonious Monk this morning. Recorded live in Paris by the ORTF (Radio France before the big change) on November 3rd of 1967.
Monk is the staple in any Jazz aficionado’s diet – in fact, anyone who loves music in general discovers Monk is required listening. One of prime forces in the Bop movement, Monk was at the vanguard and paved the way for countless musicians to follow suit. His contribution to Jazz can’t be underestimated. Evenly divided in opinions at the time, the Music of Thelonious Monk has withstood the test of years and decades, and continues to be fresh and engaging as it was the first time.
To say he was revered in Europe is to put it mildly. Jazz has always had a much bigger fan base in Europe that it has in the U.S., particularly for innovators.
This concert will give you a number of reasons why.
