L.A. Phil – Steinberg-Ashkenazy – Hollywood Bowl – July 30 1968 –

Another classic, lost concert this week. A never-before-heard Hollywood Bowl performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, guest conducted by William Steinberg and featuring the Russian sensation, Pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy in a performance of the Rachmaninoff Piano concerto Number 3. Recorded on July 30, 1968.

The concert opens with the Overture to Wagner’s Tannhauser and then jumps into the Borodin Symphony Number 2. After intermission, the orchestra is joined by Vladimir Ashkenazy and they conclude the concert with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concert Number 3.

Rare stuff with a legendary pianist and conductor – and you get to hear it here first.
