Arafat And Rabin - this Middle East Peace Thing was Becoming Contagious
Arafat and Rabin – this middle East peace thing was becoming contagious

A busy news day for November 14th 1993.

Starting with a British tourist was fatally shot and another injured when they were attacked in a botched robbery attempt today at a highway rest stop in northern Florida, authorities said. It was the second slaying of a foreign tourist in less than a week in Florida:is were sketchy, but the couple from Yorkshire, England, apparently was attacked early today at the rest stop on Interstate 10, about 40 kilometres east of Tallahassee, said Jefferson County Sheriff Ken Fortune. Fortune said the couple was sleeping in the car when approached by two men, who fired when the tourists woke up and tried to back their car out of the parking space. The man was shot in the neck and was dead at the scene.

The woman was wounded in the chest and was in good condition at Tallahassee Regional Medical Centre, a hospital spokesman said. Police said they were searching for three black men in a red car. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it was offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. The shooting brought to nine the number of tourists killed in Florida during the past year.

And Peace appears to be breaking out all over the Middle East, but the world will have to wait and see if this is the real thing. Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization have signed a historic agreement on the lawn of the White House. Jordan is said to be on the verge of its own deal with the Jewish state. Syria and Lebanon may follow soon after. Whether or not these arrangements succeed in bringing stability to a long troubled region depends on many things, but the most crucial is water.

In Canada, where water is plentiful, it is hard to imagine it being the fuel for war, or peace. In the arid Middle East, however, water has the power to make or break nations. Just like people, countries will perish without it. Israel currently consumes about 1,900 million cubic metres (MCM) of water per year, about 17 per cent more than it has in terms of annual renewable water resources, says Dr. Hussein A.

Amery, an assistant professor of geography at Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Que., Israel’s demand for water is higher than its neighbors. Much more of Israel’s arable land is irrigated than in neighboring countries. Israel is also a more urban society with a higher standard of living and a higher rate of water consumption. There are more swimming pools and green lawns in Israel than anywhere else in the Middle East.

And last but certainly not least; a dime will set off finely tuned metal detectors. Courthouse windows are sealed with screws that can’t be turned. Dozens of federal marshals and hundreds of police will ring the third-floor of the stately federal courthouse at Foley Square. The unprecedented security is planned for Tuesday’s start of the World Trade Center bombing trial. “We have taken security measures more extreme than in any other case,” says Flip Lorenzoni, chief of the U.S. marshals in New York. Four men Mohammed Salameh, Ahmad Ajaj, Mahmud Abouhalima and Nidal Ayyad – are charged in the Feb. 26 bombing that killed six, injured 1,000 and rattled nerves across the USA. A global manhunt continues for two other defendants •in what is considered the most devastating terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

A second trial, of radical Muslim Sheik Omar AbdelRahman and 13 others charged with plotting to unleash a war of terrorism in the United States, isn’t expected to begin until early 1994. More than 5,000 potential jurors have been called for Tuesday’s trial – 10 times the number called for John Gotti’s murder-racketeering trial. Finding 12 impartial jurors, who will remain anonymous, is expected to take weeks.

And that’s just a small slice of what happened on this September 14, 1993 as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.
