Sonny Rollins – Saxophone Colossus – Truth.

In memory of Sonny Rollins, whose passing was reported earlier this evening – in concert from Stockholm on January 17, 1963 and recorded by Sveriges Radio.

A life rich with legacy and well lived, it was still a shock to see the UPI Bulletin come over the desktop a few moments ago. Sonny Rollins is gone, even at 95 it was gratifying to know he was still among us – we never thought we’d be without him. Sonny Rollins was forever – everything he did left an impression, conveyed a truth, enriched the soul.

No doubt, tributes will come pouring in; reflections and assessments more articulate and first-hand than mine. He paved a way for many to travel. Luckily for everyone – the scholars as well as the newcomers, his music will be around for a very long time – my bet is for at least the next 100 years.

For now, a set featuring Sonny Rollins, with Don Cherry (tp), Henry Grimes (b) and Billy Higgins (dr). – recorded at the Konserthuset in Stockholm and preserved for future generations as so many of his live performances are by the radio organizations around the world who value and appreciate the work of legends.

Press play and sit back – reflect and discover if you haven’t already.

We lost a giant. And we won’t forget him.
